- Single Beam Echosounder (SBES)
Single beam echo sounders (SBES) measure the travel time of a single sonar pulse, or “ping,” to determine water depth. The sonar ping is emitted by a transducer just below the water’s surface, and the SBES detects the return echo from the bottom. - Multi Beam Echosounder (MBES)
An Multi Beam Echo Sounder’s primary function is to detect a wide range of depths along a swath of bottom. To determine these depths, the transducer emits a sound pulse that is reflected off the bottom and received by an array of transducers in a specific angular sector or swath.
